The Expensive Mistakes I Already Made So You Don’t Have To

My business setup page says I’ll help you avoid the expensive mistakes I already made for you. People sometimes assume that’s just a clever line. It is not. It is autobiography. Let me actually tell you a few, because the whole reason I do this work is that I learned a lot of it the hard, costly way.

I’m not going to pretend I started every venture I’ve run with a perfect foundation. I didn’t. I’ve mixed money I should have kept separate. I’ve put off paperwork that would have taken an afternoon and instead cost me far more in cleanup later. I’ve fallen for the “I’ll deal with it when things slow down” trap, and discovered, as everyone does, that things do not slow down — they just change shape.
Here are a few of the lessons I’d hand you for free:
Separate your money from day one, not from “whenever I get to it.”
Every dollar of cleanup I’ve ever paid for or done traced back to money that got tangled because separating it felt like a “later” problem. It is a now problem. It is always a now problem.
The boring foundation is the part that actually protects you.
The fun parts of a business — the brand, the work, the clients — are what you got into it for. But it’s the unglamorous structure underneath that keeps a bad day from becoming a catastrophe. I’ve learned to respect the plumbing.
“I’ll figure it out” is more expensive than asking.
I’m stubborn and capable, and for a long time that meant I Googled my way through things that a knowledgeable person could have answered in five minutes — sometimes getting it subtly wrong in ways that cost me later. Capable people often pay the most for their own reluctance to ask. I did.
Your books are a tool, not a verdict.
I avoided my own numbers at points, the same way I now watch clients avoid theirs. I know that fear from the inside. And I know what I know now: the avoiding is always more expensive than the looking.
The reason I can sit across from a client’s mess and say “okay, I can fix this” without a flicker of judgment is that I’m not judging from above. I’m recognizing it. I’ve been in some version of that chair. The expertise I sell is partly knowledge and partly scar tissue.
So when I tell you I’ll help you skip the expensive mistakes, what I really mean is: I already paid that tuition. You don’t have to enroll in the same school. You can just take the notes.
That’s what business setup at Kimberly Hill Business Studio actually is — the foundation done right the first time, by someone who knows exactly how much the wrong way costs, because she’s seen the invoice. We’ve seen worse. Let’s make sure your start isn’t one of the stories I tell later.
