The Paperwork After the Paperwork: Licenses and Permits

You formed your LLC. You got your EIN. You opened the bank account. You feel done with the official stuff.
You might not be.
Depending on what you do and where you’re located, there’s often a second layer of paperwork underneath the business-formation basics: local business licenses, city or county permits, and sometimes industry-specific registrations that have nothing to do with your LLC or your EIN and everything to do with the fact that you’re operating in a particular place doing a particular thing.
This layer gets skipped constantly, mostly because nobody tells new business owners it exists. Forming an LLC feels like the finish line. It’s actually one of several finish lines.
What to actually check.

Your city or county may require a general business license just to operate within its limits, regardless of your business structure. Some professions have their own licensing requirements on top of that — travel agents, for instance, may run into state-specific seller-of-travel registrations depending on where they and their clients are located. The requirements vary enough by location and industry that it’s worth an afternoon of specific research rather than an assumption that LLC plus EIN equals fully covered.
Why this matters more than it seems.
Operating without a required license or permit can mean fines, and in some cases it can complicate insurance or contract situations down the road. It’s rarely a same-day catastrophe, but it’s the kind of gap that’s cheap to close now and annoying to discover later.
This isn’t the flashy part of business setup. It’s the unglamorous checklist item that sits quietly in the background until someone asks about it. Better it gets checked now, by you, on your terms, than surfaced later by someone else’s question you don’t have an answer for.
If you want a second set of eyes on what you actually need for your specific business and location, that’s part of what I walk clients through at Kimberly Hill Business Studio.
