Your Business Needs a Boring Email Address (And a Few Other Unsexy Essentials)

Nobody starts a business excited about the administrative plumbing. But the plumbing is what keeps the whole thing from leaking, so let’s talk about a handful of unglamorous essentials that are easy to set up early and genuinely annoying to retrofit later.
A real business email address.
Not yourname1987@gmail.com. An address at your own domain — something like hello@yourbusiness.com. It costs very little, it makes you look established, and it keeps your business correspondence out of the same inbox as your personal life and your spam. Clients notice. So do you, the first time you can actually find an important email.
A dedicated business phone number or line.
It doesn’t have to be a second phone. A separate number through a service is plenty. It keeps your personal cell off your public materials and gives you the option to not answer work at dinner.
A simple, consistent place for documents.
Your LLC approval, your EIN letter, your insurance, your contracts. One organized folder — digital is fine — so that when a bank or a client or your CPA asks for something, you’re not searching three devices and an old laptop.
Business insurance, or at least a conversation about it.
Depending on what you do, general liability or professional liability coverage may be worth having. I’m not an insurance agent, but I’ll always nudge you to at least ask the question rather than discover the answer the hard way.
None of these are exciting. All of them are the difference between a business that runs smoothly and one that’s held together with sticky notes and hope.
